UV Curing Adhesives Industry Embraces New Technological Advancements

As global manufacturing continuously pursues precision, environmental sustainability, and high efficiency, the UV curing adhesive (UV adhesive) industry is ushering in a new wave of technological innovation. Particularly in the medical healthcare and high-end optics sectors, a new generation of UV adhesive products featuring characteristics such as "visible curing" and "zero hazardous substances" are being introduced, leading the development of high-value-added application markets.

Medical Assembly Embraces a Revolution in "Visibility" and "High Biocompatibility"

In the field of medical device manufacturing, the requirements for adhesive biocompatibility and process controllability are exceptionally stringent. Recently, Dymax, a leading industry company, announced that it will showcase its medical-grade, CMR (Carcinogenic, Mutagenic, Reproductive toxic)- and TPO-free light-curable adhesives at the MD&M West medical equipment exhibition in 2026.

The Encompass® series products featured incorporate unique "visible curing" and fluorescence tracer technologies. This technology allows operators to clearly see the adhesive's location and application before UV curing; during the curing process, the adhesive changes color to confirm complete curing; and after assembly, a fluorescence inspection can be performed under a low-intensity UV lamp. This significantly enhances quality control and traceability during the medical device assembly process. It provides an innovative solution to the challenges of process control in bonding tiny, complex medical device components.

Breakthroughs in Upstream Core Materials Accelerate Localization

The performance of UV adhesives heavily relies on their core raw materials, particularly photoinitiators. Domestic new material companies are also making progress in key raw materials. Recent announcements from Jiuri New Materials indicate that its subsidiary's annual production of 40 tons of "784 Photoinitiator" has entered the trial production stage. This product is primarily used in UV-cured products and optical materials with high color requirements. Its production will help optimize the layout of the domestic UV adhesive industry chain and enhance the localization support capability for high-end products.

Nevertheless, the comprehensive localization of UV adhesives still faces challenges. Currently, the high-end market remains dominated by international giants like Henkel and 3M. Domestic companies still lag in core materials such as high-end resins and specialty photoinitiators, and face high barriers in supply chain certification for industries like consumer electronics and automotive. However, driven by policy support, enhanced industrial chain collaboration, and the demands of emerging markets like Mini/Micro LED and new energy vehicles, domestic UV adhesives are making strides towards high-end and functional applications.

Expanding Application Market: Optics and Electronics Assembly as Key Growth Poles

According to industry reports, the annual sales volume of the UV adhesive market in China has exceeded 160,000 tons and is maintaining steady growth. Downstream demand primarily comes from optical components (e.g., lens assembly, display lamination), electronics assembly, medical devices, and precision plastic bonding. Major domestic manufacturers such as Julite Adhesive, Huitian New Materials, and Kangda New Materials have all launched series of products targeting specific niche demands like optical-grade high transparency, low yellowing, and medical-grade low volatility. In the future, with continuous technological advancement and deepening application scenarios, UV adhesives will play an even more critical role in high-end manufacturing.
